When designing an interior space – whether it’s a home or office – incorporating elements that represent the owner’s personality and unique interests is essential to creating an attractive and comfortable aesthetic. While a person may introduce popular décor trends to help balance a room, its true character resides in the accumulated details tailored to individual tastes. Since its foundation in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, more than 40 years ago, Authentic Models has made this fundamental aspect of interior design a vital component of its business.
Not content to create products that could be labeled generally as “traditional” or “vintage,” Authentic Models has drawn its inspiration from a specific aesthetic and time period – the Age of Sail and Exploration. In its varied collections of furniture, artifacts and décor accessories lay traces of maritime history, science, cartography and discovery of new lands. With these eclectic and nostalgic elements, Authentic Models hopes to bring a sense of curiosity and wonderment to customers’ personal spaces.
Authentic Models isn’t simply an interior design manufacturer with a penchant for vintage memorabilia – in fact, it began as a high-end nautical artifact and accessories business.
Company spokesperson Bianca Bartel describes that the business began “selling model ships and boats, compasses, key chains and the like. As our product line evolved, we added nautically themed oil and candle lamps and lanterns. From there, the natural progression was into home decor, and then in 2007, we launched the Authentic Models furniture collection.”
Despite its relatively new position in the world of interior decorating, Authentic Models has taken great strides to distinguish itself from the pack – scouring the globe for artifacts and vintage inspiration through auction catalogs, art books and antique magazines. From the beginning, the company has worked exclusively with small workshops to offer handmade products from skilled artisans.
While the Dutch business has established itself as a trusted purveyor of nautically-themed products, it is far from content to rest on its laurels. Authentic Models is constantly on the lookout for new and exciting inspirations to expand its collections into uncharted territory. Its ever-evolving decor offerings are ideal for a wide range of settings and home aesthetics, making Authentic Models as versatile as it is unique.
Bartel states that “Authentic Models collections fit both in classic and contemporary settings. Our pieces grace hyper-modern style homes and offices, steampunk apartments, classic libraries [and many more].”
Customers frequently praise the company’s collections for their historical accuracy and adaptability to a variety of functions in modern day interiors. Bartel recommends that customers personalize their décor schemes when employing Authentic Models’ products: “Don’t be afraid to mix and match. Let your style tell a story of who you are and where you’ve been.”
While it’s clear that Authentic Models has achieved a great deal since it began in 1968, there’s still more work to be done. Recently, the company’s products have found an unexpected level of fame in the world of Hollywood. In addition to frequently appearing in television, Authentic Models’ collections also made their way into the acclaimed movie Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium (which featured the company’s balloons, zeppelins and kids products) along with the Academy Award-winning film Hugo.
This boost in exposure has led to the development of several new product lines. In January, Authentic Models introduced Polo Club Trunks inspired by Belle Epoque’s steamer trunks. Bartel also remarks that the company will be expanding the line further in 2012. Expect more beautiful designs like those found in the Navigator’s Desk.
If you’re looking to emphasize your love of the sea, adventure, history and discovery, then Authentic Models’ sophisticated and expertly designed collections may just be the missing piece your home or office needs.
