Cleaning & Care
Aluminum can be used all year round and is 100% weatherproof. Scratches may occur from sharp objects, but can easily be restored with our touch-up kit which has a 95% resemblance to the original coating. Aluminum should be cleaned regularly (about 2-3 times a year) to avoid build-up of dirt and grime. Standard cleaning involves soapy water and a soft cloth. Do not use abrasive, acid, alcohol-based or solvent based cleaners that could damage the surface. Periodic cleaning with a gentle metal polishing paste, can be used in case of discoloration due to oxidation.
Our standard collection is made of stainless steel 304, which is highly resistant to corrosion, ideal for outdoor furniture. Stronger, marine grade stainless steel 316 is available for special projects (such as cruises / beachfront), but subject to manufacturing lead times. While stainless steel is very resistant to rust, it is not impervious. You also have the choice of powdercoated stainless steel 304, if you prefer the strength of the stainless steel, in a different color.
Stainless steel needs regular maintenance in order to keep it clean and shiny. Tea staining is a form of superficial corrosion that results from the build-up of particles on the surface of the metal which then oxidize or corrode. It does not harm the integrity of the metal but is aesthetically displeasing. Tea staining is more likely in coastal environments. If cleaned regularly, stainless steel will maintain its polished look for a very long time. For cleaning, use a Scotch-Brite pad or standard stainless steel cleaner and follow its instructions. For very bad tea staining first use a Scotch-Brite pad. If it doesn’t work, use a wire brush gently. Avoid pressing too hard, as you can make deep marks in the stainless steel. After the wire brush, use the Scotch-Brite pad again, along the grain of the metal, to keep the brushed look consistent. To avoid watermarks; make sure you wipe water away from the stainless steel fully before leaving it to dry in the shade. Avoid the use of scrubbers like steel-wool, which may contain overly abrasive metal parts. Never use chlorine-based, alcohol-based or acid products.
Highly resistant to rust and corrosion, powdercoated steel is another excellent choice for outdoor furniture. The thick layer of zinc protects the underlying metal from harsh weather conditions. MAMAGREEN offers a wide range of colors. For cleaning and care, we recommend brushing your frames gently with a soft nylon brush, to remove any debris or food stuffs. Then gently wash with a mild soap solution. Rinse well and dry with a soft towel or cloth. Never use highly acidic or caustic solvents on your MAMAGREEN furniture – it is generally not necessary and can damage the finish. Avoid using abrasive pads, hard brushes or cleansers, as they can scratch the finish and leave it dull and unattractive. For small scratches and dings, touch-up paint is available in matching colors.
Choosing recycled teak is picking out a special look, ideal for unique, casual-chic spaces. Reclaimed from abandoned buildings, our recycled teak comes in a rustic wire-brushed finish. Imperfections coming from nail holes, hinges or bolts, add character and give recycled teak its distinctive look. Small cracks and black or red spots may occur in places that have had long-term exposure to metal.
The brushed finish makes recycled teak sensitive to build-up of dirt (food remains, leaves, etc.), creating a slight risk for mildew. For this reason recycled teak tops are not advised for use under trees. Teak can change color when exposed to UV for long periods. Leaving items on top of a teak table that is in the sun can result in color marks, where the object rested since that area was not exposed to UV.
Our ecologically harvested plantation teak comes in a very smooth sanded finish. Plantation teak is the ideal wood for outdoor furniture as it maintains its quality even in extreme heat or cold. Needing less maintenance than recycled teak, these tops still need regular cleaning to avoid build-up of dirt and mildew. The original honey color will slowly change to a silvery grey patina especially with exposure to UV. Thus it is not recommended to place objects on tables for long periods of time (eg: potted plants).
MAMAGREEN takes pride in leading the way in waste reduction. At MAMAGREEN we reclaim 99% of our waste. All wood used for our Laminated Teak Tops are recycled from our production processes.
This wood is a mixture of plantation teak and reused teak wood. To withstand extreme outdoor conditions, all wood components are carefully selected according to grain and age and are then finger-jointed meticulously and laminated with a strong adhesive, suitable for outdoor use. All teakwood, if untreated will turn silvery grey when exposed to direct sunlight.
Teak Care & Maintenance
For regular cleaning we suggest that you use a nylon brush to remove any food stuff on the surface of the table, and apply a generous amount of a mild soap solution to clean it. Rinse with plenty of clean lukewarm water to remove any soap residue and dry with a soft dry cloth. Make sure it is completely dry.
Mildew: Rinse the furniture with your garden hose to remove dirt and debris. Avoid using a high-pressure washer, which can cause surface erosion, on the teak. Clean the teak with a solution of soap and water. Apply the soap solution to the wood with a nylon brush, and scrub affected areas in the direction of the grain to remove the dirt and mildew. Rinse the furniture thoroughly with clean lukewarm water, until there is no soap residue left. Set the furniture in the shade to dry fully.
Make sure it is completely dry, as humidity can cause mildew to form.
Finishing for Teak
Various products are on the market to clean and care for teak. Teak shield: protects against most food and drink marks, but still allows the teak to weather naturally. This product needs to be reapplied every year.
Polyurethane Varnish: this finish gives a warm honey color to the teak, protecting against spots and weathering. This finish needs to be maintained yearly. Untreated: the teak will turn silvery grey, not affecting its quality.
HPL (High Pressure Laminate)
MAMAGREEN has high quality high pressure laminates (HPL) made in Italy with special characteristics of durability, easy to clean and maintain. MAMAGREEN HPL are manufactured by the advanced technology of the multi-head numeric controlled machines and using a milling cutter or a special designed cutter, that will guarantee the maximum precision and a perfect finishing of the processed material.
For spills, smudges and general cleaning: Clean the surface of the table using a soft cloth (one that will not bleed color) and clean, lukewarm water. Wipe the surface evenly, rinse with plenty of lukewarm water and wipe with a soft dry cloth. Cleaning your HPL table top in a consistent manner on a regular basis will aid in long-lasting table top.
Never clean your table top using abrasive and hard cleaning materials, as they will cause scratches on the surface of the table. Only use a mild soap and never products containing bleach or acid to clean HPL. Don’t cut directly on the table surface with a knife or sharp tool. Always have a protective layer between the table top and hot serving dishes.
All of our textile comes from European (Ferrari) and American (Twitchell, Sunbrella) manufacturers with extensive experience in outdoor furniture. Slings and upholstery can be easily cleaned with a cleaner for outdoor textiles, or with a solution of soap and lukewarm water. For specific spots (such as ink or wine) the fabric manufacturers offer their own solutions. Always use lukewarm water and air-dry textiles in the shade, as excessive heat can be damaging and shrinkage could occur.
Synthetic wicker is tear-resistant and colorfast. This material can withstand extreme temperatures without deteriorating. Synthetic wicker is impervious to water, a characteristic with which the product maintains its strength and structure. Manufactured to only have smooth edges, this non-toxic material is guaranteed to be safe for all settings.
Outdoor furniture made with synthetic wicker requires very little cleaning or care, to last many years. Always avoid the use of bleach or other harsh cleaning substances and avoid brushing with hard bristles. Particularly metal bristles and harsh chemicals, must be avoided completely. Prepare a bucket with a generous mixture of gentle eco-friendly soap and lukewarm water. Never use hot or boiling water. Use a soft nylon brush. First rinse the whole surface with clean lukewarm water to remove any loose dirt and to remove any dirt or debris in the weaving if needed. Dip the brush in the soap mixture and brush in both circles and along the weaving. Make sure you brush the entire surface. Rinse off the soap mixture thoroughly with clean lukewarm water, until there is no soap residue left. Wipe areas dry with a soft towel or cloth and let dry completely, in the shade.
