This limited edition hand-built reproduction celebrates the legacy of one of the most influentional transport planes ever produced. The Dakota DC-3 took to the skies in 1936, after earlier versions of the Douglas passenger plane increased the height of the fuselage for taller passengers and even added in-flight movies. The new model was available in two versions: 14 passenger "sleeper" and a 21 seat "daytime" plane. The DC-3 had a wingspan of 95 feet and a top speed of 230 mph, which enabled it to complete a transcontinental flight in fifteen to seventeen and a half hours with three refueling stops. Its reliability and economy enabled it to remain a signifiant part of the commercial transport industry through the 1970s and influenced aviation design for decades.
This unique industrial miniature aircraft is made from flat and corrugated aluminum sheets that are etched and adorned with riveting. The twin engines, propellers and landing gear are intricately detailed to provide a scaled replica of this important aircraft. Transparent windows allow you to glimpse the inside of the cabin, while a convenient stand displays the airplane's specifications. It makes a handsome desktop accent for your desk or study bookcase.
